Summary: Hourn Point in Mount Victoria offers sweeping views over Mount Blackheath, the Kanimbla Valley and the Shipley Plateau.

A rocky outcrop at the end of Hornes Point Firetrail, Hourn Point offers sweeping views over the Kanimbla and Mount Blackheath. The lookout is named after Frederick Christopher Hourn, the stationmaster at Mt Victoria station from 1904 until 1915 (it’s often – incorrectly – spelt Hornes Point). Although it’s a fairly quiet lookout, Hourn Point is also a climbing location so it can attract a few climbers as well as bushwalkers.

Stretched out below us were the now lush green pastures of the Kanimbla Valley dotted with agricultural dams, all brimful. The glassy surface of these dams reflected images of the surrounding trees. Farmhouses could be seen tucked snugly into the shade of the trees bordering the pastures and access roads meandered across the valley floor; an idyllic bucolic scene.

A number of peaks can be seen on the far side of Kanimbla Valley: the prominent Mount Blackheath and in the far distance Mount Jenolan.

Looking west is Sugarloaf Peak and the Shipley Plateau; in the valley almost directly below is the Zig Zag Trail.

Getting to Hourn Point

Hourn Point is reached via the Hornes Point Firetrail off Mount Piddington Road; it’s a fairly easy 1.8km return walk.

The same trailhead is the starting point for the shorter walk to Boronia Point, a more secluded but less spectacular Mount Victora lookout. Both these lookouts are on the Ferris Cave Circuit bushwalk.
