The Whangaehu River flows from Crater Lake near the top of Mt Ruapehu through Tongariro National Park for over 160km until it eventually the South Taranaki Bight near Whanganui. It has a number of waterfalls and cascades along its length. Where the Ruapehu Round the Mountain trail crosses the river is a small cascade, where the Whangaehu River has carved a deep gorge in the volcanic landscape.
