Summary: The picturesque Upper Kalimna Falls in the Otways plunges 15m over a tall cliff. It's accessible via the 9.4km Kalimna Falls loop (or a slightly longer return walk).

Although regarded as less impressive than the Lower Kalimna Falls, the Upper Kalimna Falls has its own charm, as the Sheoak Creek plunges over a tall cliff-line.

The waterfall is best seen from a viewing area directly in front of the falls.

You can, with care, scramble over the boulders to reach the base of the falls where the water cascades over mossy rocks.

Getting to Upper Kalimna Falls

The upper waterfall is a bit more challenging to reach than the Lower Kalimna Falls, with the 8.2km return bushwalking trail starting from the Sheoak Picnic area. The starting point for a number of bushwalks, the Sheoak Picnic area is 4.3km (10min drive) from Lorne and the Great Ocean Road. The signposted bushwalking trail first passes the lower falls, which is a very short detour off the main trail. Up to here the track is very good.

From the lower falls, you soon branch off the main trail to follow a trail up to Upper Kalimna Falls; although the condition of the trail may vary, it had a number of fallen trees and obstacles to negotiate, and some sections can get muddy after rain.

As an alternative to returning the same way, you can form a loop by taking the Garvey Track back to the start. Although slightly longer (9.4km for the loop versus 8.2km return), it’s an easier route back along a wide firetrail.
