Located at the junction of two tributaries of Linden Creek in Meeks Gully is Turtle Falls, a small waterfall that cascades into a swimming hole. It’s unclear how and when the waterfall got its name.
The waterfall drops about six metres; it was only a trickle a few days after some light rain and it can dry up completely, so visiting after heavy rain is best.
The pool below the falls has a sandy bank and is a pleasant swimming hole, with a deep section under the sandstone cliffs. There’s no data on water quality, but as the catchment area for Meeks Gully includes residential areas, it would be best to avoid swimming for a few days after heavy rain.
Getting to Turtle Falls
You can walk down Meeks Gully from Meeks Falls which is further upstream via a very rough track – it’s more of cairned route than a track. The shorter and easiest way to Turtle Falls is by following a firetrail from the end of Shirlow Ave (near Adeline Park) which descends gently along the ridge. The firetrail turns into a steeper bushwalking track for the last 800m as it drops down to the creek.
You can also do a loop bushwalk through Meeks Gully which passes Turtle Falls, as well as two other waterfalls along the same creek.
