Summary: Sneem Falls, a popular but modest waterfall in Ireland, derives its name from “An tSnaidhm” meaning “the knot.”

It’s probably a bit of a stretch to call it a waterfall… but it’s on Google Maps! Sneem Falls would have to be the most photographed waterfall Ireland (even compared to the far more impressive Torc Waterfall), with a constant queue of people photographing the cascade from the Sneem hídja (Sneem Bridge) over the River Sneem.

The name of Sneem Falls and River comes from the Irish word “An tSnaidhm,” which means “the knot”, with the currents in the river creating a knot-like swirling pattern. While the waterfall is most easily photographed from the bridge above, you can also view it from the Goosey Island Motorhome Park which is downstream of the cascades.

Getting to Sneem Falls

The cascades are literally in the middle of Sneem – one of Ireland’s Top 10 Tourism Towns – which is divided by the River Sneem. The village is situated on the Ring of Kerry route, midway between Kenmare and Waterville on the northern side of Kenmare Bay.
