Summary: Phantom Falls in Great Otway National Park features a 15m drop into a deep swimming hole. It's accessed via a 3.5km return bushwalk.

A picturesque waterfall in the Great Otway National Park, Phantom Falls is formed by the St George River dropping about 15m into a deep pool. The pool is a popular swimming spot on warmer days.

The waterfall is more spectacular after heavy rain when the upstream Allenvale Dam overflows; it had a decent flow when I visited but can be just a trickle. Late winter to spring is likely to have the best water flow.

Getting to Phantom Falls

The most direct route to the waterfall is from the Allenvale Carpark at the end of Allenvale Road, which is about a 2.5km (5min) drive from Lorne and the Great Ocean Road. A signposted trail goes to the top of the waterfall; it ascends the entire way but never very steeply.

From the top of the falls, a short but steep track descends into the gorge to the base of Phantom Falls.

The return walk is 3.5km. You can also visit Phantom Falls via an 8.7km loop that passes The Canyon and Henderson Falls – or the even longer 18.6km Lorne Waterfalls Circuit.
