Summary: Erskine Falls, the most popular waterfall in the Otways, draws nearly half a million visitors yearly with its easy access and stunning scenery.

Although not the tallest of the waterfalls in the Otways (that honour goes to Sabine Falls), Erskine Falls is the most popular of the waterfalls. The relatively easy access and multiple viewing platforms means that Erskine Falls attracts about half a million visitors each year… so this is not the waterfall to visit if you’re after solitude… But it is the most spectacular of the many waterfalls around Lorne and along the Great Ocean Road.

The Falls are certainly very spectacular as they tumble over the dark ledges, framed by tall tree ferns and other vegetation of various shades of green. Even in drier times the cascading water is most attractive, as it forms a thin curtain falling over the black ledges adorned with green moss.

You can follow the Erskine River upstream to the base of the falls; note that the rocks below the falls are extremely slippery and the official track stops short of the base.

Getting to Erskine Falls

The are a few ways to reach Erskine Falls: the easiest route taken by 95% of visitors is from the carpark above the Falls. The carpark is 10km (15km) from Lorne. It’s a 5-minute walk down to the first lookout, where you can view the cascades from above.

Another 230 stairs descends to the lower viewing platform, from where you can see the falls plunge 30m into the Erskine River. There is access from the formed track to the Erskine River.

You can also walk up the Erskine River from Lorne, passing Spitter Falls and Straw Falls; this bushwalk is 7.6km one-way (with a car shuffle) or 15.2km return, and shouldn’t be undertaken when water levels are high.
