The original trig point – an arrow carved in the stone with a steel marker is buried under leaf litter, but unlike many other trig stations offers a great view. The historic trig point is better known as the Harold Reid Lookout, named after Harold Reid, who served as the Town Clerk (later titled General Manager) of Willoughby Council from 1956 until his retirement in 1965.
There are some nice views from the lookout at the end of the bluff (which became known as ‘The Sugarloaf’ as it supposedly resembled handmade sugar piles of the same name) over Sugarloaf Bay and Middle Harbour.
Getting to Middle Cove Trig and the Harold Reid Lookout
The very short and level dog-friendly walk to the trig and lookout start from a parking area along a loop road off Rembrandt Drive in Middle Cove (open 5:30am – 5:30pm). The large, unsealed carpark has multiple picnic tables, gas BBQs and a toilet.
