While the views from Thor Head are not quite as spectacular as from the nearby Asgard Head, it offers views over the Asgard Plateau as well as the Grose Valley. The most spectacular views are to the south-east down the Grose Valley, with the Birrabang Walls and Liversidge Hill to the left, and Anvil Rock, Bald Hill and Hat Hill directly ahead.
Across the Grose Valley to the north-east is Jinki Ridge and Dalpura Head.
Looking up the Grose Valley to the north-west is Watertrough Hill, Wilkinson Hill and the Kamarah Ridge.
To the west is a nice view over the Asgard Plateau, which is surrounded on three sides by cliffs.
The bluff was named by Myles Dunphy in the 1960s after the hammer-wielding god in Norse mythology associated with thunder, storms, strength, protection, fertility, farmers, and free people.
Getting to Thor Head
The 6.2km return bushwalk to Thor Head is all on track via the signposted Asgard Swamp Fire Trail from Victoria Falls Road.
After passing Asgard Swamp, turn left onto the bushwalking track to Thor Head, which is not signposted. The trail mostly ascends, before a small saddle just before Thor Head.
The bushwalk can be extended by continuing to Asgard Head, and with a small detour down to the old Asgard Mine.
A longer, full-day Asgard Head to Ikara Head bushwalk (which also has a short off-track section) visits Asgard Head, Thor Head and Ikara Head (as well as the historic Asgard Mine).
