Summary: Station Hill Lookout at Rawnsley Park Station provides a great view of the Wilpena Pound Range, Chace Range, and Elder Range.

Situated within Rawnsley Park Station is Station Hill Lookout, which offers one of the best vantage points of many of the mountain ranges from its elevated position. Interpretive signage provides information on each of the ranges. To the north is the Wilpena Pound Range (Akurra Ngami), which forms the natural boundary between Rawnsley Park Station and Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, and the southern “wall” of Wilpena Pound.

At the southern end is the distinctive Rawnsley Bluff, while further to the north along the range is Fred Nob, Walter Hill and Dick Nob.

To the east is the lower-elevation Chace Range, named after explorer and bullock-driver William Chace.

Some of the higher peaks of the Chance Range include Captains Head (the highest peak at 797m) at the northern end of the range, Mount Havelock (791m), Ned Knob (749m) and Yaltaordla Hill (580m).

To the west is the Elder Range (which is better viewed from the nearby Elder Range Lookout or Arkaba Hill Lookout). The highest peak is Mount Aleck (1,094m).

Getting to Station Hill Lookout

Station Hill Lookout is located with Rawnsley Park Station, which is accessed off the Flinders Range Way 34km (22min drive) north of Hawker. Follow the unsealed but well-graded Rawnsley Park Road for just under 3km, where there’s a signposted turn-off to the lookout.
