This less-known vantage point provides some phenomenal views; although Pugilist Hills is only a small pimple that’s 50m in elevation above the wide valley, the bare summit of the small hill offers unobstructed views in every direction. To the west is the Red Range and higher Elder Range.
The highest peak of the Elder Range (Mount Aleck) and Rawnsley Bluff are clearly visible.
To the east is the Chance Range…
…there’s also a great view of the full Chance Range as you drive towards Pugilist Hill.
Getting to Pugilist Hill
Access to the Pugilist Hill is via Martins Well Road, which is opposite the entrance to Rawnsley Park Station, about 21km (15min drive) south of Wilpena Pound Visitor Centre. Continue for 7.2km along the unsealed Martins Well Road, which is suitable for all cars.
Turn left onto the steep but short road up to the top of Pugilist Hill – it’s only 550m so walk up if you’re not comfortable driving the rocky trail. At the time of our visit I’d suggested you wouldf want to have at least an AWD with good tyres; descriptions of the road range from “The path demands a high-clearance vehicle due to its steep and uneven terrain” and “A bit steep, rough and rocky but most cars should manage it”!
