There are some spectacular lookouts along the Bells Line of Road which require a bushwalk – Rigby Hill, Walls Lookout and Banks Wall are all worth the effort to get to. But if you’re looking for an equally good lookout without much effort or somewhere to enjoy a picnic without the crowds, Geometric Rocks Lookout fits the bill.
There’s a great view towards the Grose Valley, with Asgard Head and the Asgard Plateau in the distance on the other side of the valley.
Geometric Rocks Lookout gets its name from the interesting rock formations, with ironstone banding and erosion creating unique concentric circles that form neatly aligned geometric patterns. A geologist explains this natural weather far better than I can:
The exposure is the result of differential weathering on Liesegang banding. The Liesegang bands contain iron oxides which cement the sand grains together forming a tighter bond than in areas where there is little Iron Oxide cement. The Liesegang Banding masks the original cross bedding in the sandstone. The appearance of folding is just that. The beds have not been deformed. The same structures can be found in numerous areas in Hawkesbury Sandstone.

Getting to Geometric Rocks Lookout
The lookout is just off Bells Line of Road, 9.4km east of Bell (and 0.5km west of Pierces Pass Road). A very short (100m) unsealed road takes you to a small parking area. From here it’s an easy, short (<200m) walk down an obvious trail to the unfenced lookout.
