Reached by a very short and easy walk from the end of Mount York Road, Eddys Lookout (and Eddy Rock) was named after Edward Miller Gard Eddy, the Chief Commissioner of Railways who was well regarded for his reform of the NSW rail system: “No abler administrator has ever been connected with railway management in Australia” (The Brisbane Courier).
The fenced viewing platform on top of Eddy Rock provides a view towards north and north-east over Hartley Vale and out to Mount Clarence and Hassans Walls.
The main lookout commemorates Major Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of NSW from 1810 to 1821, and recognises the site as beng where Cox’s Road descended into the Hartley Vale to complete the crossing of the Blue Mountains.
From here there are views to the east towards Mount Bimbo (the highest point in the region) and Bonfire Hill over the Kanimbla Valley.
If you do visit Eddys Lookout, make sure you don’t injure the toposcope, which points out all the major points of interest!
As well as the very short (300m return) walk to the lookout, some longer bushwalks you can do from here:
- Coxs Road Circuit – a very short loop that follows a short section of Coxs Road (0.6km)
- Mount York and Lockyers Road Track – a loop following this historic Coxs Road and Lockyers Road (10.3km)
Getting to Eddys Lookout
The paved trail to Eddys Lookout starts at the end of Mount York Road, which is 23km from Katoomba (25min drive) and 5km (5min) from the Great Western Highway. There is plenty of parking along Mount York Road.
