Perhaps one of the only downsides of Castle Head is that it’s becoming increasingly popular – so if you can visit during the week or very early / late in the day! The unfenced lookout offers a 270-degree view over the Jamison Valley: Mount Solitary is directly ahead, with Kings Tableland to its left and Narrow Neck and Cedar Creek to its right.
Below Mount Solitary you can see the rocky pimple that is Ruined Castle, one of my favourite Blue Mountains bushwalks – which also offers spectacular views!
Beyond Mount Solitary – looking down Cedar Creek – is Lake Burragorang, and the Broken Rock Range and Blue Breaks in the far distance.
Getting to Castle Head
Reaching Castle Head is an easy and pleasant walk, which is about 4.7km return from the Narrow Neck carpark (at the locked gate) or 9.2km if you’re starting at Cliff Drive. The first kilometre from the locked gate is along the Narrow Neck Plateau Trail, a wide firetrail.
A signposted bushwalking trail off the firetrail follows the ridge all the way to Castle Head, passing several informal lookouts along the way which also offer great views. (Just before reaching Castle Head you’ll pass the Castle Cliff trig station).
Allow a couple of hours; if you’re feeling adventurous you can explore some of the Narrow Neck ledges by taking the climbers tracks to Diamond Falls or Redledge Pass. Or if you want a much longer but easy walk, continue down the Narrow Neck firetrail to Clear Hill.
