Once a 4WD-accessible lookout, the remote Carne View Lookout in the Gardens of Stone Conservation Area is now reached on foot via the Broad Swamp to Birds Rock Trail bushwalk. Described by NPWS as “the jewel in the crown of the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area”, the lookout offers extensive views over Carne Creek. The lookout was named by Michael Keats on a Bush Club walk in October 2007.
The unfenced lookout is located above the cliff-line opposite Firetrail Number 3; the Spectacular waterfalls, slots and pagodas along Carne Creek bushwalk explores the pagodas and cliff-line on the other side of Carne Creek.
To the north you look directly down Carne Creek, with its towering cliffs on both sides; despite the impenetrable looking terrain many slots or defiles provide access down into the gorge.
Getting to Carne View Lookout
The shortest route to Carne View Lookout is from Birds Rock, which is a 7km return walk along a firetrail (the Birds Rock carpark is accessible via 4WD only). Alternatively, from Broad Swamp it’s a 17.5km walk one-way to Birds Rock via the lookout, or a 25km (approx) return bushwalk from Broad Swamp to Carne View Lookout. Both trailheads are accessed via the Old Bells Line of Road (from the Zig Zag Railway at Clarence) and the Glowworm Tunnel Road.
