There are many waterfalls in every Australian state, although the most spectacular drops are along the eastern seaboard – the Blue Mountains (NSW), Waterfall Way near Dorrigo (NSW), Lamington National Park (QLD) and Cairns region (QLD) are some of the best places to go chasing easily-accessible waterfalls.

Red Rock Falls is one of the three waterfalls near the end of the Valley of the Waters Track in the Blue Mountains.

Particularly impressive after heavy rain, Sixty Foot Falls in Mittagong has a main drop of almost 20m, followed by a smaller cascade. You can swim below the waterfall, but the Nattai River does suffer from pollution.

Split Rock Falls (or Cleft Rock Falls) is the most spectacular of two waterfalls along the Split Rock Track in the Great Western Tiers.

A tall waterfall in Springbrook National Park, Twin Falls is reached by a short bushwalk that goes to the base of the falls. The waterfall drops into a deep pool.

Vera Falls is along the Valley of the Waters Creek in the Blue Mountains. There is a rough trail to both the base and the top of the fairly remote waterfall.

Wheeny Gap Falls (also called Lagoon Creek Falls) is picturesque waterfall that cascades into a deep natural pool. A short but very steep walking trail from the end of the North Wheeny Gap Firetrail takes you to this stunning waterhole.

A short distance downstream from Wheeny Gap Falls is Wheeny Gap Pool, a larger and even more spectacular swimming hole. It's reached via a short but very steep walking trail from the end of the North Wheeny Gap Firetrail.

The Trough Waterfall (or Secret Woy Woy Waterfall Pool) is now a popular Central Coast Instagram spot. The waterfall and infinity pool are well worth a visit, but try and avoid peak times.

One of three waterfalls along Theresa Creek Road, Zillie Falls plunges 30m into a narrow valley. A viewing platform is at the top of the falls.

A very picturesque waterfall after heavy rain, Allenby Falls (or the Allenby Park Waterfal) cascades over multiple tiers. It can be reached via a few short bushwalking trails in Allenby Park, in Sydney's northern beaches.

Bettington Falls (originally called Gem Falls) is located on Greaves Creek in Blackheath, along the Rodriguez Pass walking track.

Reached by an 8km (return) bushwalk, the picturesque Big Mowbray Falls is quite secluded. Above the waterfall is a shallow swimming hole and some small cascades.

Hidden in plain sight, Bonnie Doon Falls (Ethel Falls) is just next to the Six Foot Track in Nellies Glen. A short off-track scramble gets you to the base of the falls.
