The Hiking the World blog combines my passion for hiking and photography. I’m not entirely sure if I hike in order to reach amazing places to photograph… or take photos as a way of remembering and sharing my hiking experiences!
You won’t find a description of the Pacific Crest Trail or many multi-day treks – unfortunately, work and family commitments mean that a number of longer walks across the world remain on the “wish list”. However, whether it’s finding time to do a day-walk on a family holiday or squeezing in a one-day trek while on an overseas work trip, I’ve tried to capture a number of great hikes across the countries I’ve been fortunate enough to visit!
As I live in Sydney, many of the shorter walks are in and around Sydney – and there are many world-class walks within a few hours of the city. If you are planning to visit Sydney and looking to get off the beaten track, I hope I can provide some ideas!
Happy hiking…
Oliver Descoeudres
I share your same two passions – and your same doubt about which is more important :-). Nice to know others who feel the same. Cheers

Thanks for the comment! Yes, hard to know sometimes if the reward of a long hike is in completing the hike – or getting amazing photos by making the effort 🙂

Hi Oliver. Just checking out your blog after our recent correspondence. It turns out that like you and the other commenter above I love hiking and taking photos of my hikes. I think they both evolved together a bit, although I hiked when I was young so I guess that started first. The photo taking is getting a bit out of hand nowadays as I suffer from ‘photo fomo’, so I take way too many each time I go out then have to sift through them editing and choosing which to use for the blog and social media. It’s become worse since getting a proper camera. Also based in Sydney so perhaps our paths will cross after all, and not just online.

Thanks Edward… hopefully our paths will cross on a bushwalk somewhere! Yep , life was much easier shooting Kodachrome 64 when every roll of film cost $20 to process. I’ve just finished editing my photos from January 🙂

Hi Oliver,
Noticed your comment in my blog on Orphan Rock … Thanks 🙂
Well, you and I have the same interest, hiking, photography, and writing a trip report.
Though my photography is merely randomly shooting a thousand photos and hope one of them would come out ok 🙂
I live in Sydney too. So one day we may bump into each other somewhere 🙂
Cheers, Paul
