profilepicThe Hiking the World blog combines my passion for hiking and photography. I’m not entirely sure if I hike in order to reach amazing places to photograph… or take photos as a way of remembering and sharing my hiking experiences!

You won’t find a description of the Pacific Crest Trail or many multi-day treks – unfortunately, work and family commitments mean that a number of longer walks across the world remain on the “wish list”. However, whether it’s finding time to do a day-walk on a family holiday or squeezing in a one-day trek while on an overseas work trip, I’ve tried to capture a number of great hikes across the countries I’ve been fortunate enough to visit!

As I live in Sydney, many of the shorter walks are in and around Sydney – and there are many world-class walks within a few hours of the city. If you are planning to visit Sydney and looking to get off the beaten track, I hope I can provide some ideas!

Happy hiking…

Oliver

I share your same two passions – and your same doubt about which is more important :-). Nice to know others who feel the same. Cheers

Thanks for the comment! Yes, hard to know sometimes if the reward of a long hike is in completing the hike – or getting amazing photos by making the effort 🙂

Hi Oliver. Just checking out your blog after our recent correspondence. It turns out that like you and the other commenter above I love hiking and taking photos of my hikes. I think they both evolved together a bit, although I hiked when I was young so I guess that started first. The photo taking is getting a bit out of hand nowadays as I suffer from ‘photo fomo’, so I take way too many each time I go out then have to sift through them editing and choosing which to use for the blog and social media. It’s become worse since getting a proper camera. Also based in Sydney so perhaps our paths will cross after all, and not just online.

Thanks Edward… hopefully our paths will cross on a bushwalk somewhere! Yep , life was much easier shooting Kodachrome 64 when every roll of film cost $20 to process. I’ve just finished editing my photos from January 🙂

Hi Oliver,
Noticed your comment in my blog on Orphan Rock … Thanks 🙂

Well, you and I have the same interest, hiking, photography, and writing a trip report.
Though my photography is merely randomly shooting a thousand photos and hope one of them would come out ok 🙂

I live in Sydney too. So one day we may bump into each other somewhere 🙂
Cheers, Paul

Amazing work. Wonder if you are the person looking after the Cliff Oval site. I stumbled on it mid afternoon yesterday, rubbish, beer bottles, empty crisp packets etc and a camp fire. Went back at 9am with a garbage bag today, spotless, no rubbish, the campfire gone ! These sites should be respected.

Hi. I stumbled upon your blog whilst looking at history of Trigs in Australia. I like your trig pages. I am a trig hunter and have visit about 400 in Oz, mostly in Central West NSW and Northern Rivers NSW. I use NSW SIX Maps as a guide.

Thanks for the historic info on the Sydney trigs. Do you have references you got that info from? I’m interested in learning more.

At Geocaching.com.au they have a number of trig hunters who have posted photo records of trigs all over Australia. If you are into that kind of thing it might be worth a look.

Thanks Linda – I refer to the Geocaching AU site quite frequently.
For northern Sydney trigs, most of the historical detail is from the book “Guide to the Historic Trigonometric Stations of Sydney’s North” by Tony Dawson

Hi there. Love some of the hikes and great pictures. Any way to get a high resolution JPEG of one of your specific picture? Would love to have one specifically in mind from Joshua tree. My wife and I got engaged on mt Ryan and would love one of the photons for a print. If you monitor the replies fee free to reach out if it’s possible to get a photo. Thank you!
